A Tall Conifer Too Close for Comfort

Earlier this week, our team was in Guildford to carry out the section felling of a tall conifer tree that had grown too close to a boundary fence and neighbouring property. The tree had started to lean slightly after recent storms, and with roots beginning to disturb the nearby paving, the homeowner decided it was time to have it removed before it caused any real damage.

Conifers can grow quickly and become unstable if they’re not pruned regularly, so controlled felling was the safest and most responsible choice here.

Why We Used Section Felling

Because there wasn’t enough space to fell the tree in one go, we used a sectional dismantling method — this means the tree is taken down piece by piece, from the top down, using ropes and rigging equipment to safely lower each section to the ground.

This approach is perfect for gardens with limited access or where there are nearby structures, sheds, or fences that need protecting.

How We Carried Out the Job

We started by carrying out a full risk assessment and preparing the area to keep everything safe and tidy. Once set up, our climber ascended the conifer using modern rope and harness techniques, carefully removing each limb and lowering them under control using rigging lines.

After the branches were cleared, we worked down the main stem, cutting it into manageable sections until the trunk was safely down. Finally, we used a stump grinder to remove the remaining base to just below ground level — leaving the area ready for replanting or new landscaping.

All waste was chipped on-site and removed, with the area swept clean before we left.
