This month, we were called out to a property in Epsom to remove a large mature Beech tree that had sadly become unsafe. It stood proudly at the rear of the garden, providing decades of shade and character, but recent signs of fungal decay at the base made it clear the tree was no longer stable.
After a full tree inspection, we confirmed internal rot in the main stem, and with the property sitting on a slope, the risk of failure in high winds was simply too high. As much as we all like to save trees where possible, this one had reached the end of its safe life.
Before starting the job, we carried out a detailed risk assessment and obtained the necessary checks for Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), which are common on older Beech trees. Once confirmed clear, we planned the work carefully — there were fences, sheds, and ornamental shrubs nearby that needed protecting.
Rather than a straight fell, which wasn’t possible due to limited space, we opted for a sectional dismantle, lowering each piece under control using rigging ropes and pulleys.
We started early in the morning, setting up rigging points high in the canopy. Our climber ascended using rope and harness, working methodically from the top down. Each limb was cut and lowered in manageable sections, ensuring everything landed exactly where we wanted it — no surprises, no damage.
Once the upper canopy was removed, we cut down the main stem in sections before carrying out a stump grind to leave the area level and ready for replanting.
All timber and chip were removed from site and recycled locally, keeping the job environmentally responsible and tidy.
While we always prefer to preserve trees when possible, sometimes removal is the only safe option. Beech trees, in particular, can suffer from root decay and basal rot as they age, which often goes unnoticed until the tree becomes unstable.
In this case, felling removed a serious risk to the property and gave the homeowner the chance to replant a younger, more suitable species for the space.
Our clients were understandably sad to see the old Beech go, but relieved to know the job was done safely and professionally. They were especially pleased with how tidy the garden was left afterwards — no damage, no mess, just peace of mind.
We also provided advice on replanting options, suggesting smaller ornamental species that would suit the space without growing to the same height.
