We were recently called out to a property in Epsom to deal with a large False Acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) that had become unstable following a run of bad weather.
False Acacias are known for their fast growth and brittle wood, and over time this one had developed a serious lean and a large split at the base. The homeowner noticed movement in the trunk during high winds, so they wisely contacted us for a professional inspection.
After assessing the tree, it was clear that the structural integrity had failed — the only safe option was to carry out a controlled felling before it came down on its own.
The tree stood close to a garden fence and just a few metres from the rear of the property, meaning there was no room for error. A straight fell wasn’t possible due to space, so we opted for a sectional dismantle using rigging ropes and pulleys to carefully lower each part.
Our first step was to complete a full risk assessment and secure the working area. Once that was in place, we began removing the upper canopy, branch by branch, to reduce the weight before working down the main trunk.
Using modern climbing and rigging techniques, we safely dismantled the False Acacia from the top down. The timber was lowered in manageable sections to avoid damage to nearby fencing and garden features.
This method allowed us to keep full control throughout the process — especially important with False Acacia, as the wood can splinter or snap under pressure. Once the tree was down, we ground out the stump to prevent regrowth and leave the garden ready for replanting.
False Acacia trees are beautiful but notoriously unpredictable. Their wood is brittle, their branches can snap without warning, and decay often starts at the base.
Common warning signs include:
If you notice any of these, it’s important to have the tree assessed by a qualified arborist as soon as possible.
The homeowners were relieved to have the dangerous tree safely removed. The work was completed in a single day, and the garden was left tidy and clear of debris. We also provided advice on replanting options — including smaller ornamental trees more suitable for the space.
It’s always satisfying to solve a safety problem while helping homeowners protect their property and enjoy their gardens again.
If you’ve got a tree that’s showing signs of instability, don’t wait until it’s too late. We offer free inspections and honest advice — safety always comes first.
